HOPE WITHOUT AN OBJECT

*
 Intensive Zen meditation retreat

with Frank De Waele Roshi.
Twenty hours of scheduled meditation, practice and teaching.

From 6pm Thursday, March 3rd
through 1pm Sunday March 6th.
[times are Central European Time (CET), UTC plus 1 hour].

Zen Sangha offers a three day sesshin in English from Thursday afternoon March 3rd to Sunday noon March 6th.
Sesshin literally means ‘gathering the heart/mind’.
One can participate ‘live’ in the zendo of Ghent or online on Zoom.
On Sunday March 6th a sangha member will receive jukai, our Zen way of taking refuge.

Hope is a virtue hardly mentioned in Buddhist spirituality. Yet, in her intention and compassionate action, the bodhisattva is nothing but an inspiring functioning of hope.

What is more, Maitreya, the coming Buddha, is hope’s ultimate embodiment. As the Buddha of love, she personifies our longing and justified hope. In this troubled time of corona, eco-injustice and solidified opinions, she embodies our need for an encouraging perspective of effective engagement and connection.
From its nondual perspective, Zen re-contextualises ‘hope’ as the life-affirming power of the unfolding Now.
Hope is not to be found in the expectation of a desired outcome, but rather emerges in the fulfilment of the present moment itself.

In the teachings Frank Roshi will share his  exploration of our Buddhist legacy of hope.
Also he will offer some specific practice instructions.

For this retreat we will meet each other in the zendo in Ghent OR online via Zoom four times a day .
The sesshin is set up around six practices: sitting (zazen) and walking meditation (kinhin), work practice (samu), liturgy, teaching (teisho) and a personal interview with the teacher (dokusan).
The participants follow the program according to their own possibilities, but register for at least two days.
The retreat will be in silence.

Start of the retreat
Thursday March 3rd at 6pm in the zendo (with a simple evening meal) and online at 8pm.

End of the retreat
Sunday March 6th at 1pm followed by lunch and clean up for participants in the zendo.

The main train station in Ghent is called Gent Sint-Pieters train station. From there take tram 1 (every seven minutes) to stop Witte Kaproenenplein. The ride takes about sixteen minutes.

The stop Witte Kaproenenplein is in the Gebroeders De Smetstraat. Walk back town inwards just a few metres to the corner of Witte Kaproenenplein and the Alois Joosstraat. Follow the Alois Joosstraat until you get to the Gulden Vliesstraat. Take a right and continue up to the canal Gent-Brugge and the Elyzeese Velden.
